What a pool renovation costs

As a guide, repainting a sound concrete pool sits in the low thousands, a pebble or quartz resurface on a standard family pool typically runs about $8,000 to $15,000, and a full renovation with new interior, tiling, coping and equipment can run $20,000 to $50,000 or more. Every pool is different, so treat those as guide figures and get a fixed quote. The pool renovation cost guide breaks down every scenario.

Why Redlands pools need the work they do

The Redlands is a bayside strip with an old spine. Thorneside, Birkdale, Wellington Point, Ormiston and Cleveland were built out from the post-war years through the 1980s, and the backyard pools behind those houses went in during the marblesheen and pebble decades. Alexandra Hills is the clearest case of all. It was subdivided in one long push through the 1970s and 80s, which makes it the most homogeneous pool-age cohort in the local government area: a street there will often carry the same vintage of shell and the same vintage of interior the whole way down.

An interior of that age is at or past the end of its life. Chalky or stained marblesheen, aggregate you can feel underfoot, waterline tiles letting go, cracked coping, and a single-speed pump and a chlorinator cell that were new when the kids were small. That is the resurfacing, tiling and equipment work this site is about, and it is concentrated in a handful of named suburbs rather than spread evenly.

Three other local patterns matter. Thornlands is the counterweight: newer fibreglass and newer concrete, so the work there is equipment, heating, surrounds and barrier compliance rather than a full resurface. The canal pockets at Raby Bay in Cleveland and Aquatic Paradise in Birkdale sit in salt air and salt water, which shortens the life of pumps, chlorinator cells, light fittings, balustrade fixings and pool fence hardware. And the acreage south at Sheldon, Mount Cotton and rural Redland Bay carries the big blocks and the big jobs.

One thing this site will not do is put a number on any of it. There is no published, suburb-level count of pools in Redland City. The QBCC Pool Safety Register is the only real register of regulated pools in Queensland and it is searchable by address rather than published as suburb-level open data, so a suburb figure would be invented. We describe the pool belt by suburb instead.

Selling or leasing is the deadline that moves people

In Queensland both a sale and a new lease bring the pool barrier into play, and a fence that was compliant in 1995 very often is not now. A pool safety certificate is issued only by a QBCC-licensed pool safety inspector, after they inspect the barrier, and it is valid for two years on a non-shared pool and one year on a shared one. The barrier defects that fail an inspection are usually a day or two of trade work. The trap is leaving it until the agent has the listing ready. See fencing and compliance for how the regime actually works.

The mainland, and island enquiries

This site covers the 12 mainland localities of Redland City and says so plainly in the trust strip at the top of the page. That is a deliberate limit, not an oversight. Resurfacing is not a single-visit trade: it needs a crew, a materials delivery, a chip-out, a cure and several return visits, and on the bay islands every one of those is a separate booked vehicle barge crossing. A lead nobody takes is worse than no lead.

Island enquiries: Island enquiries sets out what we will and will not promise for a pool on Russell, Macleay, Lamb, Karragarra or Coochiemudlo Island, or on North Stradbroke Island. We will pass an island enquiry on, and we will not pretend we can promise a renovator will take it.

How this service works

Redlands Pool Renovations is a local referral service, not a trade business. You tell us what the pool needs, and we pass it to an experienced, insured local pool renovator who works your suburb, licensed where the work requires it, and they call you back with a free, no obligation quote. In Queensland, building work valued over $3,300 generally requires a QBCC-licensed contractor, so ask for the licence number and check it on the QBCC register.

Frequently asked questions

Do you cover the bay islands?

Not as serviced suburbs. Pool renovation needs repeat trips with a crew and materials, and on the four southern bay islands and on North Stradbroke Island each trip is a booked vehicle barge crossing. The honest position is set out on the island pool enquiries page, and we will still pass an enquiry on.

How old does a pool have to be before it needs resurfacing?

A quality pebble or quartz interior commonly gives 15 to 20 years. Original 1970s and 80s marblesheen is well beyond that, which is why so much of the older Redlands stock is being done now.

Is salt air really that hard on a pool?

On the canal fronts at Raby Bay and Aquatic Paradise, yes. Equipment pads, light fittings, gate hardware and balustrade fixings all corrode years earlier within reach of the water, and a renovation there is as much about replacing corroded hardware as about the interior.

Who issues the pool safety certificate?

A pool safety inspector licensed by the QBCC. Never this site, and never the trades we refer. The contractors we work with repair the barrier defects before that inspection.
